And For My Final Trick - Peter Neville (Poetry)

Updated: Sep 20, 2018

Without even noticing

I’ve been slipping into someone else’s story,

I’m a background extra

Taking any role that’s left for me,

Until I start to rust

Creatures made of dust don’t last long in the sun,

Please forgive my sins

Promise me that there are good times to come.

I’m not asking for guidance

I’m not counting on hope

I’ve been running scared so long

That I’ve tangled up the ropes

And the shackles that I wear

Cut deep into my wrists

And the glowing exit sign

Is getting hard to resist.

Where do I go from here?

I don’t know, I cannot know, I will never know

And for my final trick watch me disappear

In a puff of smoke

In the blink of an eye

Goodnight my friends

And goodbye
